The Basquiats gathered in NYC at the top of the year to celebrate the born day of Brand.CJay. The night was a true homage to one of his favorite films ‘The Godfather’. The setting was Nonna’s table in Manhattan which happens to be James Beard Award winning chef Ron Suhanosky’s new innovative locale. Authentic Italian market by day, reserved table for 10 by night. The illustrious evening was hosted by luxury site and cigar aficionado Flawless Crowns.

Sade and John Legend wow crowds at the YUM! Centre

A normal Friday night in Louisville turned into an amazing musical experience for many people recently. Both Sade and John Legend performed to adoring fans in the YUM! Center to start the weekend on a beautiful note. John Legend began the night in an eye-catching white suit and pleased fans with his renditions of ‘Ordinary People’ and ‘Used to Love You’. For many, this was a once in a lifetime experience, having only seen their idol on the television, while they are playing party poker or listening to his songs on the train. To see him performing much-loved songs live, was an amazing experience. After John Legend and just as eagerly awaited, Sade took to the stage. Appearing dramatically from beneath the stage, she stepped into the spotlight and began her performance with last year’s hit, ‘Soldier of Love’.

The atmosphere of this performance was electric, with a big screen behind her projecting silhouettes, images and videos. During the rest of the show, screens on each side of the stage were used in a similar way, adding drama to the appearance of the performance. Satisfying the audience with her songs, Sade played hits including ‘Paradise’, ‘Smooth Operator’ and ‘No Ordinary Love’. These songs went down well, with the crowd giving her a very warm reception. During the show, she went through a few costume changes, adding variety and excitement which the audience absolutely loved. Her first outfit was all black and tight-fitting, while her next consisted of a pant suit and white shirt. She then transformed again, wearing a white dress with no shoes. Other songs she performed included ‘Jezebel’, ‘The Sweetest Taboo‘ and ‘Cherish the Day’. The concert was a resounding success, with both Sade and John Legend being on top form and delighting fans with their performances.

Sade: Live

It’s been a life long want/need of mine to see Sade live and it finally happened this past weekend. Sade brought her sold out tour to the Staples Center in Los Angeles to a packed house. True fans of Sade know there are songs of hers that you listen to when going through a heartbreak, others when you want a simple 2 step, and others when you can only imagine what true love feels like. Yet no matter what tune she was singing, everyone was on their feet and singing along. I’ve said it before here, but “Kiss of Life” remains to be my favorite song in the world and Sade didn’t let me down with her live version. The overall experience is a real grown and sexy moment that I’m honored to have experience in my lifetime. Now that’s one thing I can check off of my bucket list…

When In L.A.: Alameda Swapmeet

It’s funny being born and raised in L.A., their is always some uncharted territory somewhere waiting to be seen. This weekend Mr. Soto (our official “All Things Mexican in L.A.” tour guide) took us to the Alameda Swapmeet. I seriously felt like I was soaking up Mexican culture within the confines of 100 sq feet. The food, music, people, and vibe was perfect for a Sunday afternoon. This is one stop in L.A. you must add to your bucket list. Read more after the jump…

Your 2011 Oscar Nominees Are…

Was I the only nerd up early this morning to find out who the nominees were? Well no real surprises, except maybe Christopher Nolan not grabbing a nod for Best Direction for ‘Inception’. ‘The Kings Speech’ took most nominations with 12 and coming in second was a flick I just saw this weekend ‘True Grit’ with 10 nominations. Check out the top nominees after the cut:

Cheers To That

It’s been a truly amazing start of a year for I.AM.CJay that included celebrating and popping bottles all over Los Angeles. One place we are truly excited to have experienced is Drago Centro in Downtown Los Angeles. The food was simply amazing, great italian dishes coupled with a sexy atmosphere. I’m not going to bore you with the details but I will say the lo gnocco alla romana is to die for. Hands down the best gnocchi I’ve ever had in my life. It’s topped with oxtail ragot and gorgonzola creme. We also had the lamb rack for two which really brought the meal together. The drinks, the wine, the food, and the company all made for an enchanting evening.

Must See Movie: Black Swan

Every now & then a film comes along that leaves you talking about favorite moments once you leave the theater, Black Swan was just that movie experience for me. The film was all together dark, funny, beautiful, and all completely trippy. Natalie Portman gives one of the best performances of her career and Mila Kunis was a standout as well. Trust me when I tell you this is a must see movie. more »
